James Paul Marsden, or better known as just James Marsden, was born on September 18, 1973, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, to Kathleen (Scholz) and James Luther Marsden. His father, a distinguished Professor of Animal Sciences & Industry at Kansas State University, and his mother, a nutritionist, divorced when he was nine years old. James grew up with his four other siblings, sisters, Jennifer and Elizabeth, and brothers, Jeff and Robert. He has English, German, and Scottish ancestry. During his teen years, he attended Putnam City North High School which was located in Oklahoma City. After graduating in 1991, he attended Oklahoma State University and studied Broadcast Journalism. While in university, he became a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. While vacationing with his family in Hawaii, he met actor Kirk Cameron, and his actress sister, Candace Cameron Bure. They eventually invited James to visit them in Los Angeles. After studying in Oklahoma State for over a year and appearing in his college production, Bye Bye Birdie" he left school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue his interest in acting. James got his first job on the pilot episode of The Nanny (1993) as Eddie, who was Margaret Sheffield's boyfriend. He then became part of the Canadian television series, Boogies Diner (1994) which aired for one season. After that series ended, he got a brief role as the original Griffin on Fox's Party of Five (1994. His first big break came when he became the lead on the short-lived ABC series, Second Noah (1996. Although the show didn't last long, the young actor received enough exposure from the public and even managed to win the hearts of fellow teenage girls. In 1996, he attended an audition for a movie titled Primal Fear (1996) but unfortunately lost that role to Edward Norton. Two years later, he was offered a lead role in 54 (1998) which he turned down. The role later went to another actor, Ryan Phillippe. James' star power increased when he starred in David Nutter's Disturbing Behavior (1998) alongside Katie Holmes and Nick Stahl, which had mixed reviews, but mostly positive ones. His role in the television series as Glenn Foy in Ally McBeal (1997) is probably one of his biggest achievement to date. He became one of the main cast members during the first half of season 5, where he showcased his singing abilities. It was in that show where he was able to grab the attention of audiences from different backgrounds. The 5' 10" star later played Lon Hammon Jr. in the romantic movie, The Notebook (2004) which was based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks of the same name. His movies, Lies and Alibis (2006) and 10th & Wolf (2006) was also released around the world to audiences in the year 2006. One of his most memorable roles to fans is his role as Cyclops in the X-Men (2000) movie franchise. The movie was well accepted by audiences and critics, which eventually made James one of the hottest stars since it was released. He was among the actors who starred in all three of the X-Men movies. James had the honor of working alongside Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen and Hugh Jackman in the film. However, not many people know that he actually had to wear lifts for most of his scenes in the X-men movies, because his character Cyclops is supposed to be 6" 3" compared to a 5' 3" Wolverine. In reality, he is actually under 6' 0" shorter than Famke Janssen who plays his love interest, Jean Grey, and even shorter than Hugh Jackman who played Wolverine. In the year 2006, he played Richard White in the highly anticipated movie, Superman Returns (2006) which coincidentally was directed by Bryan Singer, who also directed previous X-Men installments. Although he appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) the third installment of the X-Men franchise, many would notice that he in fact had more screen time in 'Superman Returns' as Lois Lane's long awaiting fiancé who had to accept the fact that his fiancée is in love with the man of steel. James earned great reviews from that movie, which led to him getting more movie roles. In 2007, James played Corny Collins in the film Hairspray (2007) an adaption of the Broadway musical based on John Waters movie, Hairspray (1988. He joined a star-studded cast, starring alongside top names such as John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Michelle Pfeiffer. James not only acted in that movie, but also sang two of the film's songs, The Nicest Kids In Town" and "Hairspray. Being part of Hairspray catapulted James to a different level of stardom as audiences got to see another side of him. His next role was in the Disney movie, Enchanted (2007) playing Prince Edward, where he acted alongside Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon and Patrick Dempsey. Once again, James had the opportunity to sing in two songs from the movie, True Love's Kiss" and "That's Amore. Enchanted (2007) appealed to not only older audiences but also to those who were fans of Disney's network productions. Following his huge success in the years 2006 and 2007, James played the male lead role in the romantic comedy, 27 Dresses (2008) opposite actress Katherine Heigl in 2008. The movie did well at the box office, earning a gross revenue of over 159 million, which exceeded the expectations of crew members especially since it was under a 30 million budget. Marsden played the male lead in the horror film, The Box (2009) based on the 1970 short story "Button, Button" by author Richard Matheson. He starred opposite Cameron Diaz in the movie. He co-starred in Accidental Love (2015) previously Accidental Love (2015) a politically-themed romantic comedy, directed by David O. Russell and filmed in Columbia, South Carolina. Marsden's recent film roles include the sequel comedy Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) the romantic drama The Best of Me (2014) and the comedy Unfinished Business (2015. James was married to Lisa Linde, an actress known from her role in Days of Our Lives (1965. Lisa is the daughter of legendary country music songwriter Dennis Linde. The couple wed on July 22, 2000 and have a son, Jack Holden Marsden who was born on February 1, 2001, and a daughter, Mary James, who was born on August 10, 2005. They divorced in 2011. James has another son, born in 2012, with model Rose Costa. Many would assume that with all this success achieved by James at this age, he would be somewhat high-headed but James mentioned that despite all the attention he's getting from the public eye, he tries to keep himself as grounded as possible. He even admits that he flies coach instead of first class while traveling with his family. In an interview he mentioned that he believes he has a certain responsibility to let his children know that he isn't special because of what he does, but who he is as a person. With a great humble attitude and a bright future ahead of him, there's definitely more to expect from this Oklahoma native. More.

Sony had temporally shut down production before the switch after placing it into turnaround. [6] The announcement came after Neal Moritz's Original Film banner signed a first-look production deal with Paramount the prior month, ending their previous deal with Sony, and several months after Sony's film financing partner LStar Capital ended its deal with Sony due to a string of box office failures from the studio. [37] 38] Despite the change of studios, the production staff working on the film remained employed and moved to Paramount as well. [6] On 22 February 2018, an official press release was put out confirming the film's move to Paramount and a release date of November 2019, a date that was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter two days prior. [42] 43] On 29 May 2018, it was revealed that the film would have a budget of 90 million. [46] Takashi Iizuka soon after corrected though, that he would be supervising the film. [47] Sonic the Hedgehog was originally slated for a 15 November 2018 release, but after Sony Pictures' turnaround, it was changed for a release on 8 November 2019 by Paramount Pictures. [48] In an exclusive IGN interview the first official poster for the film was released on 10 December 2018, revealing its official title as Sonic the Hedgehog. [2] Soon, the movie release date was changed again, this time to 14 February 2020, in order to accommodate for Sonic's redesign. [1] Casting On 29 May 2018, it was reported that Paul Rudd was in talks for a lead role as Tom, a cop who befriends Sonic and will likely team up to defeat Dr. Eggman. [53] Principal photography commenced on 24 July 2018 and ended in Vancouver, Ladysmith, and Vancouver Island on 16 October 2018. During filming, the picture was shot under the working title "Casino Night" a reference to the level in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. [8] 54] A casting call was ordered to run on 18 Aug 2018, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm PT and 19 Aug 2018, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm PT for residents of Ladysmith, BC. The roles were for the "townsfolk" from the fictional town, Green Hills. [55] Filming ended on 16 October 2018. [56] Despite this, more filming took place in downtown San Fransisco in late October. [57] Post-production of Sonic the Hedgehog and additional photography began and ended in New York in October, where Jim Carrey shot his scenes. [58] 8] Visual effects and design Following the criticism of Sonic's initial design, director Jeff Fowler stated that Sonic would be redesigned, resulting in the film's release being postponed three months. [59] The visual effects for Sonic the Hedgehog are provided by Industrial Light & Magic, Blur Studio, Digital Domain and the Moving Picture Company. [60] Screenwriter Patrick Casey revealed that for the film, Sonic would have a design that was still him and yet a "little more realistic. 61] As promised, the production team created a new, more realistic version of Sonic, adding fur, new sneakers, two separate eyes, 2] 62] and a more human-like physique. [63] They used Ted, the living teddy bear from the Ted films, as a reference to insert a CG character into a real-world setting. [2] In an interview with IGN, Tim Miller explained Sonic's redesign: Sonic's humanoid appearance has been described as evoking an uncanny valley -type of revulsive response by viewers. [64] However, on 2 May 2019, it was announced by Jeff Fowler on Twitter that Sonic would receive a redesign following the criticism of the first trailer for the film that was released. [65] 59] While the film's release date in November 2019 initially stayed unchanged, it caused concerns that a design overhaul of Sonic would cause the visual effects teams to be overworked. [66] 67] However, Fowler would announce on Twitter on 24 May 2919 that the film had been moved to 14 February 2020. [1] It is estimated that the delay of the film and the redesign of Sonic put the film 5, 000, 000 or less over its original budget of 90, 000, 000, for a total of 95, 000, 000. [68] Music On 13 February 2019, Junkie XL confirmed that he would compose the score for Sonic the Hedgehog. [69] Riff Raff, who has a role in the film, will make an appearance on the soundtrack as well. [70] On 23 January 2020, it was announced that a single titled " Speed Me Up " performed by Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla ign, Lil Yachty and Sueco the Child would be featured in the film. [71] A day later, Junkie XL announced that the album of the score would release the same day as the film. [72] Marketing At the Comic Con Experience in Brazil on 6 December 2018, test footage was screened for the public to see. [73] Later, on 10 December 2018, a teaser poster featuring the redesigned Sonic was released. [2] The design was unfavorably likened to those from the 2019 video game film adaptation, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, which added fur and skin textures to the Pokémon characters. [63] The reveal of Sonic's redesign received mostly negative responses from critics and fans alike. [74] 63] Former members of Sonic Team, who created the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, likewise expressed surprise at the design. [75] Shortly after the first poster for the film was revealed, a second one was leaked online, prompting fans to criticize Sonic's design for its positioning of Sonic's legs and its lack of resemblance to the Sonic games. This would lead to the creation of an internet meme where users recreated the position. [76] 77] The official Twitter account for the film soon after posted an image of Sonic behind a sign reading: Can't a guy work out. 78] More criticism from fans later emerged when images of Sonic's design leaked in March 2019. "Shocked" by the design, former Sonic Team president and Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka felt the ratio of Sonic's head and abdomen was imbalanced. [79] The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was shown on 4 April 2019 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. [80] It was subsequently released online on 30 April. What it got was near-unanimous criticism, 81] 82] 83] with Gita Jackson of Kotaku describing it as "horrific" and "a blight upon this weary earth. 81] Sonic's design was likewise criticized, his humanoid appearance in particular, 81] 83] and some writers found the use of Coolio 's " Gangsta's Paradise " inappropriate. [84] 85] Conversely, CNET 's Sean Keane praised the humor and references to past Sonic games. [86] Two days after its release, the trailer had been viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube. [87] Paramount deleted the original trailer from its YouTube channel around the same time when the new trailer was released. A second trailer revealing the redesigned Sonic was released on 12 November 2019. [88]  The trailer received far more positive responses, with many praising Sonic's new design. The tone and the humor also received positive reviews. [89]  Naka said he felt the new design was "much more Sonic-like. 90] Animator Max Schneider stated that the redesign took around five months and was achieved without stressful overtime. [91] The second trailer received the highest like-to-dislike ratio of any trailer on Google in the last three years. [92] On 11 December 2019, Sega of America announced the line of merchandise that would be releasing for the film. [93] Toys were to be made by Jakks Pacific and Build-A-Bear Workshop, and Toy Factory and Sega Amusements would make novelty items for amusement parks and attractions. Children's books were to be published by Penguin Publishing. Apparel and home decor would be made by Bioworld, Bentex, TVM Fashion Lab, Cooneen and Franco Manufacturing. A statue will be made by Diamond Select Toys, and Sega Shop will release various items. In-theater promotions like drink toppers and popcorn buckets would be offered by Snapco and Ping Solutions. More promotions included a tie-in with fast food restaurant Jack in the Box for Tiny Tacos, and an event in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle with a new track based on a location from the film, and playable teen and baby versions of Sonic. [94] 95] 96] Release The accompanying artwork for the 2020 reschedule. Originally, Sonic the Hedgehog was scheduled for a 2018 release by Columbia Pictures. [34] However, after the turnaround, Paramount Pictures rescheduled it to 15 November, 2019. [40] Eventually though, it was changed again for release in the United States on 8 November, 2019. [48] Later, in May 2019, director Jeff Fowler announced that the film would be delayed (again) to 14 February 2020, in order to "make Sonic just right" following the claims to make changes to Sonic's design in the film. [1] 97] The movie's world premiere took place at the Paramount Theatre on 25 January 2020. Box office In the United States and Canada,  Sonic the Hedgehog  is projected to gross 41–47 million over in its four-day opening weekend. [98] Future Before the film's release, Jim Carrey said in an interview, I wouldn't mind going to do another  Sonic the Hedgehog  movie because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ. There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis. 99] Trivia Yuji Naka was originally supposed to appear in the film as an extra but was forgotten during production. [100] Van Robichaux originally wrote a scene for the film where Dr. Robotnik had a coffee maker named Mean Bean Machine after the game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine but it was cut from the final film. [101] In the first official trailer for the film, the line "Every Hero has a Genesis" is a nod to the Sega Genesis, the debut console for the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game. Sonic can be seen playing Table Tennis with himself on a road sign that reads "Hill Top Rd. This was named after Hill Top Zone, a Zone that debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic can be seen wearing a headband with a title icon design that is identical to the original one that debuted on the splash screen for the original Sonic the Hedgehog. The truck that was used for Galvatron in Transformers: Age of Extinction was reused in this movie for Robotnik. Sonic can be seen balancing on a light in a similar sense to his original balancing sprite from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. This was a gag added to the film by the request of Tyson Hesse. [102] Sonic can be seen pulling off a similar pose to his official artwork in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Videos Trailers Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Trailer 2019 Sonic The Hedgehog (2020. Largely inspired by Sonic CD, it features Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Dr. Eggman, Hyper Metal Sonic (ハイパー・メタル・ソニック Haipā Metaru Sonikku) and a few original characters, such as the human Sara (セーラ Sēra) her father the President of South Island (大統領 Daitōryō) the steward owl (執事 Shitsuji) also known as Old Man Owl (おじさん Oji-san) and Black Eggman (ブラック・エッグマン Burakku Egguman. In Japan, the animation was released on two rental-only VHS volumes on January 26, 1996 and March 22, 1996 respectively before being released for retail sale on May 31, 1996. The episodes are about 30 minutes in length and are titled Welcome to Eggmanland (エッグマンランドへむかえ Eggumanrando e Mukae) and Sonic VS Metal Sonic. ソニックVSメタルソニック!! Sonikku VS Metaru Sonikku. An English dub was first released on September 7, 1999 by ADV Films, titled Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie as a single VHS and DVD, with the two episodes combined into one to make it flow more like a movie. This release date was chosen to closely coincide with the Western release of Sonic Adventure, which came out two days later. World The main setting of the film is Planet Freedom (惑星フリーダム Wakusei Furīdamu) which is composed of two distinctly different layers. The story begins on the outer layer, which is comprised of interconnected floating continents, called the Land of the Sky (天の大地 Ten no Daichi) and eventually moves to the surface of Planet Freedom, which is referred to as the Land of Darkness (闇の大地 Yami no Daichi. In the opening scenes of the film, we see Sonic and Tails on their small, unnamed home continent. This continent is part of a larger group of interconnected continents which are referred to as South Island, this group of continents is a country governed by the President of South Island. It is presumed that other country boundaries exist within Planet Freedom. Story Sonic is relaxing on the beach of their South Island home when Tails comes out to test a new jet-propelled surfboard and asks Sonic if he wants to give it a try. Sonic declines, so Tails begins to surf on his own. Out on the water, he is knocked from his surfboard by a small aircraft piloted by the President of South Island 's steward, Old Man Owl. He shouts that he has some news for Sonic, who seems irritated to see the Old Man on their island doorstep yet again. The engine of the Old Man's small aircraft has begun to fail and catch fire which Tails attempts to fix mid-flight but to no avail, leaving them on a collision course with the oncoming cliff side. Sonic hears Tails' cry for help and runs to save them, rescuing them from danger moments before impact. Old Man Owl informs Sonic that he is being urgently summoned by to the Presidential residence. Leaving the kind but bumbling owl in charge of their abode while away, Sonic and Tails board the Tornado and fly to the President's house to answer the call. Once they arrive, it appears that the President and his daughter Sara are being held against their will, and as a result Sonic must listen to what Dr. Eggman has to say. Dr. Eggman says he is in need of Sonic's help to rid the Land of Darkness of a mysterious being known only as Black Eggman who has taken over his city, Eggmanland, on the surface of Planet Freedom. He explains that Black Eggman has sabotaged the Egg Generator that sits at the center of the city and if Sonic does not shut it down it will cause a giant explosion which will destroy the entire planet. Once Sonic and Tails have left, the charade is dropped and it is revealed that Eggman has somehow bribed Sara and the President into pretending to be his hostages. Sara and Eggman enjoy several rounds of a fighting video game which Sara keeps losing at, but demands that Eggman continue playing the game with her or she will stop being his hostage. Sara continues to lose several more rounds of the game before announcing that she wants to be taken for a drive somewhere. As if on cue, the curiously empty shell a flying robot crashes through the roof and Eggman and Sara climb in despite her father's plea for her to stay. After flying for some time, Sonic and Tails approach the storm eye-like entrance to the Land of Darkness. They swoop down into it, the winds so strong that Sonic is nearly blown from the wing of the bi-plane. After a turbulent descent they crash-land, the Tornado taking heavy damage. They set off once again to find Eggmanland, traversing many perilous paths and facing a barrage of Eggman's robots on the way before entering a warp zone which takes them to the ruins of an ancient, abandoned city which appears to resemble our own New York City. Black Eggman appears ominously, congratulating them for making it so far but Sonic and Tails promptly mock and attempt to evade him in order to continue to Eggmanland. Sonic and Tails fake their own drowning below a highway bridge in hopes that Black Eggman will believe them dead and leave. As they try to sneak away, they find that the mechanical giant was simply waiting to ambush them and attacks by shooting huge globs of a superglue-like substance, adhering Tails to a nearby fence. Black Eggman deploys hedgehog-seeking missiles at Sonic who then turns them back on their shooter, exploding on impact and damaging the robot substantially. Sonic accidentally steps in a pile of the superglue, adhering him to the pavement and leaving him unable to run. As rain begins to pour and Black Eggman's massive weight cracks the pavement with each step towards the duo, the waters begin to encroach Sonic. With the water nearly above Sonic's head Black Eggman takes aim at the hedgehog, preparing to shoot. Just then Knuckles swoops in and knocks Black Eggman off balance, causing the shot to miss. Tails pulls Sonic from his impending watery grave and the trio launch a team-attack on the flying robot, causing it to explode in mid-air, effectively destroying it. They move on together to locate the entrance to Eggmanland. The three friends travel warily into the core of the city, finally finding the Egg Generator in the center of the massive base which looks to be on the brink of exploding. Sonic shuts it down in the nick of time but finds himself trapped, seemingly magnetized and unable to escape the eerie green glow of the force field surrounding the generator. Once it finally releases Sonic, the generator starts to collapse. Tails grabs Sonic, who fell when the generator released him, and the three watch curiously as something in the center of the Egg Generator begins to come to life. Suddenly, Sonic is face-to-face with his robotic twin, Hyper Metal Sonic. In a dramatic entrance, Black Eggman seems to return from beyond the grave but the charade and Black Eggman itself fall to pieces again only moments later as it is still badly damaged from earlier. As noises of shouting are heard from the rubble, Sonic is shocked to see Sara working with Eggman. The rotund villain mocks Sonic for falling for his trap and in a fit of rage Sonic runs at Eggman but Metal Sonic beats him there, blocking him and causing much shock and worry to Tails and Knuckles who have never seen anything move faster than Sonic before. Even though she has played a part in Eggman's plan, Sara was unaware of his intent to use Metal Sonic to destroy the real Sonic. A battle between Sonic and Metal ensues, their speeds and moves nearly matched. Visibly concerned, Tails carries Knuckles back through the warp zone to find the Tornado and return to South Island. In combat high above the ground, Metal knocks Sonic off of a mountainous peak to the forest far below, presumably killing him as Metal's heart pulse monitor for Sonic appears to flatline. Sonic presumed dead, Metal Sonic travels to South Island before Tails and Knuckles have a chance to arrive. The robotic hedgehog duplicate ominously approaches Old Man Owl as he lays on the beach in the middle of the night and curiously forces the Old Man to dress in Sonic's favorite clothes. In the morning, Tails and Knuckles arrive in South Island and Knuckles begins repairs on the Tornado while Tails modifies Eggman's navigation device, turning it into a locator to hone in Metal Sonic's location, and by association, Sonic's. Tails explains that Sonic and Metal will always be in the same place because Metal shares all of Sonic's thoughts, memories, and personality; even his likes and dislikes. Tails and Knuckles receive a call from the President, who tells them he has been receiving reports of a Sonic-like figure destroying several cities in the Land of the Sky. They quickly deduce that Metal Sonic is the source of the destruction and that his next target is the glacial bridge at northernmost tip of the interconnected continents. Which, if destroyed, would cause the Land of the Sky to be hurled into space by the centrifugal force of the planet. After Tails urges the President to not breathe a word of this information to Sonic, the blue hedgehog reveals that he had been listening in the entire time and quickly rushes northward to stop Metal Sonic. Sonic arrives to find that Metal Sonic is already working quickly to force magma to the surface, causing a giant geyser of molten rock to erupt precariously close to the ice bridge. The two face off once more, each predicting the other's actions move for move. Sara and Eggman appear from a warp zone just as Metal Sonic goes flying upward, his head bashing through the underside of Eggman's ship. Sara is thrown from the ship by the impact but the young girl is saved by Knuckles before she hits the ground. After some affectionate encouragement from Sara, Knuckles attempts to redirect the flow of the magma away from the ice bridge by digging tunnels beneath it. Sonic, weakened by his fight with Metal so far, is barely able to stand and collapses on the ice-covered ground. Metal grabs Sonic and begins choking him, prompting Tails to make use of the modified locator device to overload the robot with Sonic's emotional data and causing him to malfunction and release Sonic, giving him the chance to damage him. The President arrives, but his ship crashes into the ice bridge, jarring shut the door to the ship and trapping himself and Old Man Owl inside. As Tails flies Sonic to their aid, Metal Sonic appears again. Knocking them both out of the sky and blocking their way to the ship which has now begun to catch fire. Eggman sniper-shoots Tails' device from above, destroying it before he can use it to overload Metal Sonic again. Sonic and Metal continue their fight until eventually a strike from Sonic sends his robotic twin flying into the President's ship causing the entire thing to explode. Metal Sonic emerges from the smoke holding the President and Old Man Owl, having saved them from the explosion. Metal Sonic drops them to the ground before a large chunk of debris knocks him down into a deep crevice filled with magma. Sonic, having seen that Metal Sonic is capable of empathy for other beings, immediately jumps down the incline, sliding down to try and save the terribly damaged robot. He reaches a hand out to Metal Sonic who slaps it away, realizing that he must perish, as there can only be one Sonic in the world. Sonic is incredibly distraught, Knuckles having to restrain him from trying to save his robotic double as Metal Sonic becomes submerged, lost under the magma. Later, as everyone is overlooking the ice bridge which has been saved from destruction, Sonic is lost in thought. He appears still saddened by the loss of Metal Sonic. Tails and Sara attempt to cheer him up, but are interrupted as Eggman appears behind them touting the fact that he still possesses the CD containing all of Sonic's data. He explains that he plans to create an even more powerful version of Metal Sonic which would omit the part of Sonic's data containing his personality so that he would have no weaknesses. Too caught up in his egotistical speech to notice, one of Eggman's unaccounted exploding robots reappears just in time to grab the CD and detonate, destroying itself and Sonic's data along with it. Everyone laughs and then Knuckles hits Sonic on the head, claiming it was payback for earlier when Sonic accidentally stepped on him while fighting Metal Sonic. Knuckles runs off and Sonic chases him, with Tails following both of them. Sara, Old Man Owl, and the President all pile into Eggman's ship and demand that he catch up with Sonic. Eggman obliges and as they fly up behind Sonic they all try to grab for him, Sara shouting that she wants to marry him and Eggman claiming that he will eventually get Sonic's data again, but Sonic simply races away. Trivia & Censorship In the original Japanese version, Sara refers affectionately to Knuckles as Mr. Mole (モグラちゃん Mogura-chan) when he saves her, presumably as a joke because she does not know what sort of animal Knuckles is. This occurs only once, but was correctly translated, and so is present in the English translation. The only actual censorship in the English dub is the omittance of quite a few curse words which were present in the Japanese version that were replaced with more mild-sounding language. A soundtrack for the film was to be released but was canceled due to the series' lack of popularity. The film is directed by Jeff Fowler (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It also stars James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the film, Sonic teams up with a small-town sheriff named Tom as he attempts to escape Dr. Robotnik and the government. In 2013, Sony Pictures acquired the film rights to the franchise, and by 2014, had a movie adaptation in development. Fowler was hired to direct in 2016. After Sony put the project in turnaround, Paramount Pictures acquired it in 2017, and the majority of the cast had signed on by August 2018. Filming took place between July and October 2018 in Ladysmith and Parksville both on Vancouver Island, and in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is the first entry in a planned film series. [5] Sonic the Hedgehog was initially scheduled to be released in the United States on November 8, 2019, but was delayed to February 14, 2020 after an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the first trailer, which was released on April 30, 2019. Paramount delayed the film in order to redesign Sonic, whose original design drew the most criticism. The redesign was shown in a new trailer that was released worldwide on November 12, 2019. The second trailer was well-received for its tone and humor with Sonic's redesign receiving particular praise with many noting how similar it is to Sonic's main design in the games. Premise Sonic ( Ben Schwartz) a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog from another world, comes to Earth to escape malevolent forces that seek to harness his power of super-speed. After accidentally causing a massive power outage and hiding out in the town of Green Hills, Montana, Sonic is targeted by the government who then hire the tyrannical roboticist Dr. Robotnik ( Jim Carrey) to hunt him down. Meanwhile, ex- SFPD officer-turned-Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski ( James Marsden) meets Sonic and decides to help him evade capture, collect his rings and stop Robotnik from using Sonic's powers for world domination. [6] 7] Cast Ben Schwartz as the voice and the facial motion capture [8] 9] of Sonic: an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog from another dimension who can run at supersonic speeds and is not only on the run from Robotnik, but also the government. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik: a scientist and inventor who is after Sonic and his super-speed powers for world domination. [10] James Marsden as Tom Wachowski: a former SFPD officer-turned-newly appointed sheriff of Green Hills who befriends Sonic and aids him in his quest to stop Robotnik. [11] Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski: Tom's wife who helps him and Sonic evade Robotnik. [12] Lee Majdoub as Stone: a corrupt government agent who works closely with Robotnik. [13] Adam Pally as Billy Robb: a fellow police officer of Green Hills and Tom's friend. [14] Neal McDonough as Major Bennington [14] Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl [15] Additionally, Natasha Rothwell, 16] Debs Howard, Elfina Luk, 17] Riff Raff, Shannon Chan-Kent and Garry Chalk have been cast in undisclosed roles. [18] 19] 20] Production Development Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the rights to produce and distribute a film based on Sonic the Hedgehog in 2013. [21] On June 10, 2014, a live-action animated film was announced as a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet. [22] It would be produced by Neal H. Moritz by his Original Film banner alongside Takeshi Ito, Mie Onishi, and Toru Nakahara, and written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. [22] In February 2016, Sega CEO Hajime Satomi said the film was scheduled for 2018. [23] Blur Studio 's Tim Miller and Jeff Fowler were hired in 2016 to develop it; Fowler would make his feature directorial debut, and Miller and Fowler would executive produce. [24] Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel were writing the screenplay, while Casey and Miller wrote the story. [24] 25] On October 2, 2017, Paramount Pictures announced that they had acquired the rights after Sony's Columbia Pictures put the film into turnaround. Most of the production team remained unchanged. [26] In February 2018, it was announced that the movie would be released in November 2019. [27] 28] Casting On May 29, 2018, it was reported that Paul Rudd was in talks for a lead role as Tom, a cop who befriends Sonic and will likely team up to defeat Dr. Robotnik. but was later denied. [29] A day later, it was announced that James Marsden was cast in an undisclosed role, but later revealed to be Tom Wachowski. [11] In June 2018, Tika Sumpter was cast. Jim Carrey was cast to play the villain, Doctor Eggman, here renamed to his original Western name of Dr. Robotnik. [10] In August 2018, Ben Schwartz joined as the voice of Sonic. [30] A few days later, Adam Pally and Neal McDonough were cast. [31] Debs Howard and Elfina Luk joined the cast the following November. [17] Filming Principal photography took place from July 24, 2018 and ended in Vancouver, Ladysmith, and Vancouver Island on October 16, 2018. Post-production and additional photography took place in October in New York, where Carrey shot his scenes. [32] Visual effects and design Comparison of Sonic in both trailers; from top to bottom: original design from first trailer released in April and edited design from second trailer released in November. The visual effects are provided by Moving Picture Company (MPC) Marza Animation Planet, Blur Studio, Trixter and Digital Domain. [33] The production team created a realistic version of Sonic using computer animation, adding fur, new running sneakers (which turn out to be the Puma Speed 500's in Red) two separate eyes, 34] and a more humanlike physique. [35] They used Ted, the living teddy bear from the Ted films, as a reference to insert a CG character into a real-world setting. Executive producer Tim Miller said: It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It's part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature. According to Miller, Sega was not "entirely happy" with the design of Sonic's eyes. [34] On May 2, 2019, in response to criticism of the design, Fowler announced on Twitter that Sonic would be redesigned. [36] The November release date was delayed to February 14, 2020 as a result. [37] Artist Tyson Hesse, who worked on previous Sonic the Hedgehog media, was brought on to lead the redesign. For the redesign, Sonic was given larger and differently colored eyes, new running sneakers (based on Women's Dare Mesh Sneakers made from Puma, which also resemble the original Sonic sneakers from the games) white gloves, and a less humanlike body in order to resemble the character's design in the video games. [38] It is estimated that the delay of the film and the redesign of Sonic put the film 5 million or less over its original budget of 90 million for a total of 95 million. [3] Music In February 2019, Tom Holkenborg, who previously worked with executive producer Tim Miller on Deadpool, signed on to compose the score. [39] It will be released alongside the movie on February 14, 2020. Riff Raff, who has a role in the film, will also appear on the soundtrack. [40] An original song titled "Speed Me Up" by Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla ign, Lil Yachty, and Sueco The Child will appear in the film's soundtrack; the single was publicly released on January 24 on Atlantic Records. [41] Marketing Sonic's initial design received heavy criticism from Sonic fans for his overly humanoid appearance and lack of similarities to his game appearance. Fowler confirmed on May 2, 2019 that his design would be changed, with the film also being delayed for three months. [36] Test footage was screened at the Comic Con Experience in Brazil on December 6, 2018. [42] A teaser poster was released on December 10, 2018, revealing the silhouette design of Sonic. [34] It received a mostly negative response from critics and fans, 43] and was compared unfavorably to another 2019 video game film adaptation, Detective Pikachu, which had added fur and skin textures to the Pokémon characters in a much more successful manner. [35] His humanoid appearance was described as evoking an uncanny valley -type of repulsive response by viewers. [44] Former members of Sonic Team, who created the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, also expressed surprise at the design. [45] A second poster was leaked online shortly after the release of the first. Fans complained of a lack of resemblance to the games and criticized the positioning of Sonic's legs, spawning an Internet meme in which users recreated the position. [46] 47] The film's official Twitter account posted an image of Sonic behind a sign reading: Can't a guy work out. 48] Images of the Sonic design were leaked in March 2019 to more fan criticism. Former Sonic Team president and Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka was "shocked" by the design and felt the ratio of Sonic's head and abdomen was imbalanced. [49] According to animator Max Schneider, Paramount expected that Sonic fans would object to the redesign but that general audiences would not care, as had been the case with their 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. He said Paramount felt the design gelled with the real-world setting and characters. [50] The first trailer premiered on April 4, 2019 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, 51] and was released online on April 30. It experienced a highly negative reception, 52] 53] 54] with Gita Jackson of Kotaku calling it "horrific" and "a blight upon this weary earth. 52] Sonic's design was criticized, particularly for his overly humanoid appearance, 52] 54] while some writers found the use of Coolio 's " Gangsta's Paradise " out-of-place. [55] 56] Conversely, CNET ' s Sean Keane praised the humor and references to the games. [57] Within two days of its release, the trailer had been viewed more than 20   million times on YouTube, and had received hundreds of thousands of "dislike" ratings which drastically outnumbered the "like" ratings. [58] Paramount deleted the original trailer from its YouTube channel around the same time when the new trailer was released. A second trailer revealing the redesigned Sonic was released on November 12, 2019. [59] The trailer received far more positive responses, with many praising Sonic's new design. The tone and the humor also received positive reviews. [60] Naka said he felt the new design was "much more Sonic-like. 61] Schneider said the redesign took around 5 months and was achieved without stressful overtime. [50] The second trailer received the highest like-to-dislike ratio of any trailer on Google in the last three years. [62] As a promotional tie-in for the film's release, the movie version of Sonic was added as a playable character to the Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces mobile games. [63] Release Sonic the Hedgehog was originally scheduled to be released sometime in 2018 by Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures label, but in February 2018, shortly after taking over the rights, Paramount Pictures rescheduled it to November 15, 2019. [23] 64] The film was later moved a week earlier to November 8, 2019. [65] Following the announcement of the character's redesign in May 2019, director Jeff Fowler announced that the film would again be delayed for just one last time to February 14, 2020, to get "a little more time to make Sonic just right. 66] The redesign was later shown in a new trailer released worldwide on November 12, 2019. The film's world premiere took place at the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles on January 25, 2020. [67] Box office In the United States and Canada, Sonic the Hedgehog will be released alongside Fantasy Island and The Photograph, and is projected to gross 41–47 million over in its four-day opening weekend. [62] Future Before the film's release, Jim Carrey said in an interview, I wouldn't mind going to do another Sonic the Hedgehog movie because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ. There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis. 68] Notes References ^ a b c d e "Sonic Billing" PDF. Paramount Pictures. 0:15 Gotta go Fast. "Finally! The only thing left to be done is to capture the essential life data from your counterpart, then you'll be complete, my Hyper Metal Sonic! When you awaken. kill him! An hour-long anime OVA starring everybody's favorite blue hedgehog. Produced by Studio Pierrot and Sega, it was originally released in Japan in 1996 (initially as the two half-hour VHS tapes Journey to Eggmanland and Sonic vs. Metal Sonic) the English dub by ADV was released on September 7, 1999, two days before Sonic Adventure internationally hit the shelves. Sonic and Tails are chillaxing on the beach when they receive a dispatch from the President of South Island: he and his daughter Sera are being held hostage ( for a given value of "hostage" by Dr. Robotnik. Oddly enough, what Robotnik wants is Sonic's help: he's been forced out of his base by the evil(er) Metal Robotnik, who has overloaded the power generator of Robotropolis. In less than a day, the generator will explode and cause the end of Planet Freedom as we know it. Sonic and Tails fly off to the city; along the way, they're joined by the free-roaming treasure-hunter Knuckles (and his hat) who just happens to be in the area. However, when the trio finally reach the generator, they find that the story was a ruse to extract Sonic's DNA and enable the completion of Hyper Metal Sonic: a robotic dopplegänger who not only has Sonic's speed, but Sonic's personality as well. Also, it turns out that Robotnik actually has no compunctions about blowing up Planet Freedom, since he'll then rule it by default — followed by ' a life of undisturbed marital bliss with Princess Sara. Sonic the Hedgehog is widely regarded as that rarest of rarities: a video game movie that doesn't suck. The voice acting in the English dub is debatable, and it holds only a superficial resemblance to the events of the games, and yet the plot, art, and characterization still do an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the classic games. In any case, at time of release, the Sonic series had far less canon to take into account. ADV Films released two different versions of the movie on DVD, although they are both the same dub: the original 1999 version which edited out/censored several bits of the movie, and a 2004 version which is completely uncut. This film is not to be confused with the anime series, four western animation shows or the film adaptation also based on the Sonic character. Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie provides examples of: Abnormal Ammo: Metal Robotnik's glue gun, which happens to be located in is. nether regions. Accidental Pervert: Sonic can apparently see through Metal Sonic's eyes due to Metal being a copy of Sonic; this explains why Sonic was blushing when Metal got a good look up Sera's skirt. Tails also grabs hold of Sera after being scared and one of his hands mistakenly grabbing onto one of her breasts. Knuckles reads him the riot act. Knuckles: TAILS! Get off! Tails: Immediately leaps off her with an embarrassed look] I'm so sorry! Knuckles: I never thought you'd stoop that low! Adaptational Jerkass: Sonic is more easily annoyed and angered than his portrayal in the games. Adam and Eve Plot: The end point of Robotnik's scheme: himself and Sera married, and the only remaining inhabitants of Planet Freedom. Affably Evil: Robotnik. When he isn't acting up the part of hostage-taker for Sonic, he gets along pretty well with Sera and the President. One of his robot minions can be seen cleaning up the President's office. After the End: It appears this is where Sonic and everyone lives, as seen in the desolate city (among other things) that Sonic and Robotnik fight it and the fact that there's not a lot of other people/creatures/characters aside from the ones we see. Alternate Continuity: On this planet, watching this movie, you'll notice, you'll notice, many things that look alike: The OVA has its tone, music and art style rooted directly in the original Genesis titles ( Sonic CD in particular) but the explanation for the urban environments found in those games ( post-apocalyptic Earth populated with anthropomorphic mutants who live in a sky kingdom ruled by. cat people, we guess) is completely different from anything else found in the series. Some exclusive characters pop up here and there, and there is no mention of the Chaos Emeralds anywhere. In addition, Knuckles is also depicted as a treasure hunter who lives for the thrill of his job, rather the guardian of the Master Emerald. Later games such as Sonic Unleashed did away with all ambiguity by calling it "Earth" and showing Sonic traveling from city to city, Kino -style, and interacting with humans. Would that the OVA thought up such a mundane solution! Alien Sky: A planet with Saturn-like rings is visible in the sky. And That's Terrible: Tails says it almost verbatim when Sonic runs to Metal for the first time: This is terrible. Animation Bump: The fight scenes. The rest is more limited, despite the designs being (somewhat) similar to those from Sonic CD Apocalypse How: Robotnik's plans to sunder the link keeping the Land of the Sky attached to the Land of Darkness, which will result in the destruction of all sapient life on the planet bar himself and Sara, is an Invoked case of Class 4. As You Know: Lampshaded; the writers seem to just admit to it - the characters even fall asleep listening to it. Robotnik: As you both well know, Planet Freedom is made up of two separate dimensions. The outer world, the one you live in, is known as the Land of the Sky! Sonic: Tell us something we don't know! Robotnik: SHUT UP! HEED ME! Badass Adorable: Tails. Badass Bookworm: Dr. Robotnik, the creator of Hyper Metal Sonic! Also Tails, keeping his Gadgeteer Genius persona from the games. Baby Talk: Tails sounds like he has this in the dub, despite his ability to create a jet-propelled bodyboard, fly the Tornado, and modify Eggman's navigator into a signal jammer. Bare Your Midriff: Sera during the first half of the movie shows off her middle, but not so much after she dons her dress later. Bash Brothers: Taking the characters directly from Sonic 2 and 3 gives us Sonic and Tails, moreso that any other adaptation and even many of the games - a good amount of the movie is huge action scenes where Sonic and Tails engage in coordinated asskicking so effective only the most powerful enemies stand a chance. Batman Gambit: Robotnik lures Sonic to Robotropolis by claiming a villain named Metal Robotnik had taken over, and that Robotropolis' generator was set to overload. In reality, it was a ruse to lure Sonic there to copy his data and activate Metal Sonic. Big Damn Heroes: Knuckles' entrance. Big "SHUT UP. SHUT UP, TAILS! Bittersweet Ending: The world is saved, but Metal Sonic (who had then formed a mental bond with Sonic) deliberately allows himself to perish in a glacial volcano. Why? Because "There is only one Sonic. Blind Idiot" Translation: After crashing their plane upon entering the Land of Darkness, Sonic and Tails crash their plane, the Tornado. Then before departing for Eggmanland, Tails comments that he's "worried about the Tornado. The translators were apparently unaware that this was the name of their plane, as they translated that line as "I'm worried about that tornado. Bond Villain Stupidity: Robotnik is clearly one of those grandiose super villains who doesn't want to simply kill his foe, but first defeat him in something resembling a fair fight. Hence the scene where Robotnik, taking advantage of Sonic's and Tails' distraction, whips out a handgun and shoots Tails' wrist-radar: even though Tails' head must have been an equally clear shot. Brick Joke: Eggman launches two bombs at Tails' plane, one modeled after a tortoise, the other a hare. The hare bomb blows up the plane instantly while the tortoise one crawls away from his hovercraft. Much later, the tortoise bomb crawls towards Eggman and explodes. Brilliant, but Lazy: Sonic, particularly in the opening scene, where he doesn't move a finger to help Old Man Hoot until it becomes clear that Old Man and Tails are in grave danger. The Cameo: A lone Crabmeat, a swarm of Buzzbombers, A Caterkiller-colored Crawlton, and a recolored Snail Blaster all make appearances throughout the movie. Canon Foreigner: Sonic and Tails are enjoying a relaxing day on the beach when they're visited by "Old Man Hoot. Hoot is he. who's carrying a message so urgent that he doesn't notice his airplane is on fire. The President and his daughter are among the other newbies. Cat Girl: Sera. Catch a Falling Star: Sera falls out of Robotnik's aircraft, and Knuckles catches her in mid-air. Catch and Return: Sonic rides a missile right back into the robot that shot it. Cement Shoes: Sonic's two weaknesses are combined as he gets glued to the ground in a fissure that is filled by the rain. He's saved by Knuckles and Tails. Chair Reveal: Sonic and Tails show up for their appointment at the Presidential manor, but are instead greeted by a reclining Robotnik and his huge Dr. Claw chair. Chased Off into the Sunset: With the day saved, Sonic runs for the horizon. Tails and Knuckles follow, then everyone else piles into Robotnik's Eggmobile and flies after. Sonic realizes that everyone is following him, and he puts on a burst of speed before the credits roll. Chekhov's Gag: Robotnik's extremely-slow-moving turtle missile. It pops up later just in time to destroy the CD Robotnik has with Sonic's DNA data that he could use to make another Metal Sonic. Compilation Movie: The western release of the OVA consists of both episodes of the OVA played as an hour-long movie. Composite Character: The OVA made Knuckles a treasure hunter just like Fang the Sniper, and gave him a hat similar to his. Cool Old Guy: Old Man Owl. Curb-Stomp Battle: Sonic is almost effortlessly beaten by Metal Sonic in their first fight, and only survives because Metal Sonic loses track of him. Interstingly, their final fight was also turning into a curb stomp battle before Tails interferred, as Sonic didn't have the stamina to keep up with Metal Sonic for more than a couple of minutes. If Tails hadn't stepped in and corrupted Metal Sonic's programming, Sonic would have been killed. Cute, but Cacophonic: Sera. Darker and Edgier: Well, compared to the older games, it could be. Death Course: The path to Robotropolis, though Sonic and Tails make short work of it. Sonic: I bet Robotnik purposefully picked the route with the most traps for us! Diabolus ex Nihilo: Quite literally, as Metal Robotnik "appeared out of nowhere. before kicking Robotnik out of his home. It's signposted very early on that Metal Robotnik is under the Doc's power, but it's remarkable that he couldn't think up a more plausible threat. Disc-One Final Boss: Metal Robotnik is defeated by Sonic about a fourth of the way through the film. Also justified, as the whole thing was a ruse set up by Robotnik so he could lure Sonic into a trap and finish creating Metal Sonic. Distressed Damsel: Sera. sort of. She plays the role of hostage when Sonic's around, but she treats Robotnik like a friend the rest of the time. Sera and Robotnik are playing a fighting videogame. Sera loses. Sera ( hysterical) No no no no no it's not fair you always beat me every time. abruptly regains her composure) Alright, one more! Robotnik: Just give up! We've played a hundred times! Sera ( devious) I'll stop being your hostage. Robotnik: Alright, start it again. The Ditz: Old Man Hoot didn't even realize his rocket was on fire! The Dragon: Metal Sonic. Dub Name Change: The official English dub renames Dr. Eggman to Dr. Robotnik for one of the last few times (as it was released in 1999. To go along with it, Eggmanland was renamed Robotropolis (as a Shout-Out to the Saturday morning cartoon) and Black Eggman was renamed Metal Robotnik. In addition, Sera was renamed Sara; her and Eggman's names are still displayed clearly in the fighting game gag, however. The official subtitles included in the DVD release go with the Japanese terminology and retranslate the script more accurately to boot. Cue Subbing vs. Dubbing. Early Adaptation Weirdness: Since the movie was released only five years into the franchise's life, there are some moments that would nowadays be considered majorly out of character, such as Sonic telling Tails to shut up, and Knuckles describing himself as "Sonic's best friend. While Knuckles clearly respects Sonic, and they get along (most of the time) he's much too gruff to say something like that. Sonic is also depicted as somewhat quick-tempered, contrasting his cool and laidback portrayal from later games, who is described as being "always cool under pressure" by official bios. The setting itself is also unusual, with society living on floating islands while the ground level of the planet is a desolate wasteland. Egopolis: Robotropolis, aka Eggmanland. At night, the city's lights form a picture of Robotnik's face. The End of the World as We Know It: Two different schemes are mentioned. Metal Robotnik's exploding generator turns out to be fake, but Hyper Metal Sonic's attempt to shatter the continents is very real. Everybody Laughs Ending: When Robotnik's CD containing Sonic's DNA data is destroyed, the entire cast gets a chuckle out of it. Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep" The President. Evil Knockoff: Metal Sonic, natch. Expy: Sera is pretty much a humanoid Amy Rose. The presumed reason for Amy's absence is that her being the president's daughter as well as Eggman's 'interest' would not have worked well for several reasons. Eyelid Pull Taunt: Tails does this towrads Metal Robotnik. Face Death with Dignity: Metal Sonic, oddly enough. Face Fault: Sonic and Tails do this simultaneously when Old Man Owl starts to convey his message before stopping abruptly, having a minor fit. and starting all over again. Family-Unfriendly Death: After being dismembered over the course of his fight with Sonic and even moreso after the President's rocket explodes, Metal Sonic basically commits suicide by letting himself sink into lava. Fastball Special: Used twice in a row to defeat Metal Robotnik. Finger Wag: Sonic to Metal Robotnik. Often mistaken by fans for another gesture entirely. To be fair, it is the case in some edits of the film. Fear of Thunder: Tails. "I'm afraid of lightning. Fearful Symmetry: Portions of Sonic's fight with Metal Sonic. Flash Step: Sonic, Tails, and Metal. Floating Continent: Between the plethora of floating landmasses and the cloud cover, the surface of Planet Freedom is largely shrouded in darkness; hence why it's called "the Land of Darkness. This is probably also the reason that the entire population lives on the outer layer, the Land of the Sky. The Fool: Old Man Hoot. Gadgeteer Genius: Tails. He builds a hover-surfboard in his spare time, disassembles one of Robotnik's radars, and later reassembles it as a device that can track Metal Sonic: and wirelessly interfere with Metal's programming. This movie appears to be where Tails' mechanical tendencies come from, in fact. Gag Dub: Reputable Dubbing's Sonic the Other Movie is a comedic rewrite of the movie, made by Sonic Paradox's Smegerama. Though most of it is the same story, the dialogue and various visual gags change it into a mostly comedic experience. Fireball 20XL 's Sonic Bastardized is a redubbed adaptation in which Robotnik Eggman wants Sonic to go shut off a bomb he planted in Blizzard Entertainment 's mainframe (in retribution for his World of Warcraft losses) and Metal Sonic is a robot named Hyper Metal Jason (after Jason Griffith) that Eggman intends to use to replace Sonic's voice. Robotnik: SHADDAP! Blood elves are cool! Then comes The Rollan Nolan's Sonic the Abridgehog. Get Ahold Of Yourself Man: Sonic attempts to knock some sense into Old Man Hoot by making a Crabmeat pinch him, with limited success. Go-Karting with Bowser: Dr. Eggman is seen playing around with the president and his daughter in several scenes. Gone Horribly Right: Eggman programmed Sonic's DNA and life data into Metal Sonic to make him as formidable a fighter as the real Sonic. This also leads Metal to manifest some traits of Sonic's personality, leading to him pulling a Heroic Sacrtifice to save Old Man Hoot and the President. Heel–Face Revolving Door: Sera can't seem to decide whose side she's on. Here We Go Again. Averted. Eggman reveals after the final battle that he still has the data of Sonic's DNA via a CD, which he'll use to make another Metal Sonic to combat Sonic again. only for the missile turtle Robotnik fired away earlier to arrive on time and destroy the CD by accident. Humongous Mecha: Metal Robotnik is actually a giant robot piloted by Robotnik. Human Snowball: Happens to Tails after Eggman blows up his plane in the mountains. In a Single Bound: Sonic and Metal Sonic in particular are seen pulling off several massive jumps over the course of the film, often when traveling at speed or fighting. It's most notably seen in their second fight scene, where the two are moving so quickly that they're only visible as streaks of coloured light. Info Dump: Eggman's speech to Sonic at the White House. Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sonic. Knight of Cerebus: Metal Sonic. Before him most of the film played most everything humorously, Eggman barely even qualify for much a threat due to the Go-Karting with Bowser above. Then Metal Sonic shows up and BOOM, we have a villain that's actually dangerous and for the most part, nothing about him is played humorously. Left for Dead: Subverted! Metal Robotnik shoots the bridge from underneath Sonic and Tails; they grab bridge girders just out of sight and make gurgling sounds to convince Metal Robotnik that they're drowning. Just when they think he's left. I see you! You didn't think I'd fall for a stupid trick like that, did you. Last-Second Chance: Hyper Metal Sonic rescues the President and Old Man Owl from an exploding rocket towards the end of the film, but having been dismembered in his fight with Sonic and then by the resulting explosion, he falls into the magma pit below and is melted on-screen, refusing to be rescued by Sonic on the grounds that "there is only one Sonic. Killed Off for Real: Hyper Metal Sonic. Makes Us Even: Sonic: Thanks a lot, pal! I owe you one! Knuckles: I think we're even. Mood Whiplash: The scene where Metal Sonic dies is really stuck in utter contrast to the previous scene, which was a comedic albeit intense action-packed battle. Heck, it sticks out in utter contrast with the rest of the film's tone and mood in general. Motivational Kiss: Sera gives one to Knuckles. Mythology Gag: Throughout the Land of Darkness, Sonic and Tails are shown avoiding various spikes on the ground, followed by Sonic jumping onto a spring. Tails has a severe case of astraphobia in the movie. This is a reference to his astraphobia mentioned in his character bio in Sonic Jam. Neck Lift: Metal Sonic does this to Sonic whilst simultaneously throttling him. Never Say "Die" Averted. "When you awaken. KILL him. cue Evil Laugh) Also averted when Robotnik meets Sonic at the Generator. Robotnik: You fell for my trap! You came all the way here and now you'll die here. Good job, Sonic! Nice Hat: Knuckles has one. If just for the Rule of Cool. Used later when it gets set on fire in the climax of the film. Knuckles: MY HAT'S ON FIRE, HELP! Noble Demon: Hyper Metal Sonic. Non-Standard Character Design: Sera. Unlike the other characters in the film (who blend in well with the stylistic and simpler animation) she's drawn much more realistically and would not feel out of place if she were in a Magical Girl anime. Not-So-Harmless Villain: Robotnik is set up as a bumbling, buffoonish idiot who is actually being bullied by his supposed "hostage" in several scenes. Then comes the last third of the film, where it reveals Metal Sonic is the key to his latest plan, which itself consists of the complete genocide of all sapient life on the planet. Ocular Gushers Oh, Crap. Tails when he and Old Man Owl are about to crash into a cliff face on the island. Robotnik when Sara falls from his ship. Tails when Robotnik's missile is about to make contact with the Tornado. The President panics when his crashed plane catches on fire. Seconds later, Sara has one when the President's ship explodes. Robotnik when his CD containing Sonic's DNA data is destroyed by his tortoise robot. Only One Name: Sera. Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Dub Sonic will sometimes switch back and forth from sounding like a southern teenager to a British Bifauxnen when the voice acting gets particularly energetic. Robotnik will also occasionally slip into an indeterminate European accent, noticeably when he shouts "FINE! DON'T BLAME ME WHEN THIS HAPPENS. Our Presidents Are Different: He's both President Target and President Buffoon. Panty Shot: During the climactic battle, Metal Sonic's head gets knocked through the bottom of Robotnik's hovercraft, right under Sera's dress. While we don't actually see anything, Sera is unsurprisingly pissed and starts kicking him in the face. Sera: Back, no no no! Don't look there, you pervert! Personality Chip: Thanks to the wristwatch Tails received from Eggman that he managed to dismantle, he is able to wirelessly mess with Metal's personality programming, and this gives Sonic a crucial advantage in the fight. Pet the Dog: After winning his first fight against Sonic, Metal Sonic tracks down Old Man Hoot and. gives him Sonic's favorite clothes. Pilot: The film was originally released as two separate half-hour pilots in Japan, but due to Sonic's lack of popularity there the potential anime series never got off the ground. When it was dubbed, the two specials were merged together and released in the US as what we call Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. Pimped-Out Dress: In the climax, Sera wears a white dress trimmed with feathers. Poke the Poodle: Among Metal Sonic's acts of evil he randomly decides to steal Sonic's favorite clothes and give them to Old Man Hoot. Power Creep, Power Seep: In S3&K, Knuckles could glide through the air. Here, it gets upgraded to the ability to jump ridiculously high, hover in midair, and possibly fly outright. Like Tails' propensity for mechanical shenanigans, this movie seems to be the start of a trend of non-game media to upgrade Knuckles' gliding to full-fledged flight. Properly Paranoid: When Robotnik tells everyone what is happening in the Land of Darkness if Sonic doesn't stop the overheating generator, Sonic shrugs it off as he knows Robotnik is lying, but everyone tries to encourage him that it might not be the case (Sonic states that Robotnik lies 99 out of 100. However Sonic was in the right after everyone found out that the generator melting down was a hoax. Punctuated! For! Emphasis. As Metal Sonic dies, he says, THERE. IS. ONLY. ONE. SONIC-NIC-NIC-NIC-NIC. Psychic Link: Between Sonic and Metal Sonic. Sonic: You might know everything I'm going to do. But that's not going to help you, since I know everything you're going to do! STRANGE, ISN'T IT? Real Men Wear Pink: Sonic's aforementioned "favorite clothes" include a pink shirt. Red Oni, Blue Oni: Sonic is the Red Oni to Tails and Knuckles' Blue Oni 's. Redemption Equals Death: Metal Sonic saves the President and Old Man Owl from an exploding hovercraft, only to be smashed into a lava pool he had opened up a few minutes ago. Ret-Canon: A few elements from this incarnation were carried over into the games: The terms "Eggmanland" and "God of Destruction. The idea of Knuckles being a treasure hunter. The depiction of Station Square as a flooded city in ruins at the end was likely inspired by the ancient ruins in the OVA, even using much of the same imagery. Several of Tails' game bios mention that he's afraid of lightning. The earliest known mention of this trait in the context of the games was Sonic Jam, which came out a year after this OVA, so it's likely another example of the trope. Riding the Bomb: Sonic, on one of Metal Robotnik's missiles. Robo Cam Ruins of the Modern Age: The "ancient relics" on the outskirts of Robotropolis/Eggmanland resembles an abandoned New York City. Save the Villain: At the ending, Sonic makes an effort to save Metal Sonic as he's being consumed by magma, but Metal refuses his help. Scenery Porn: Damn, Planet Freedom looks pretty cool. Shattered World: Planet Freedom. Shout-Out: One of the derelict aircraft on Sonic's island looks suspiciously like the USS Enterprise. Sera's wedding dress is reminiscent of Neo-Queen Serenity 's outfit. During the view of the city of the Land of the Sky, there's a building with a design that looks suspiciously similar to the classic Rareware logo. Shut Up, Hannibal. Robotnik gets a whack from an annoyed Sara when he gloats about how Sonic will face an even greater threat than his just-defeated Metal Robotnik. Silent Antagonist: Metal never talks until the end, when he sinks into lava. Sliding Scale of Adaptation Modification: The OVA is a Type 2 (Recognizable Adaptation. Stupid Statement Dance Mix: Planet Freedom, Planet Freedom, they conquered Planet Freedom. We're going to the North Pole, North Pole, North Pole. That means Tails finally found the point of Planet Freedom, yes! Surprisingly Good English: The ending song, Look Alike" is sung (and spoken for a bit) in, for the most part, note  well-pronounced and grammatically correct English. Take My Hand: Sonic to Metal when the latter is about to sink into lava. Metal declines, saying "There is only one Sonic. and then dissolves. Translation Train Wreck: One DVD version of the movie has subtitles that, for example, call Knuckles "Knucklus. Eggman "Machine King. and Tails "Dillus. The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Sera. Unusual Euphemism: Sonic will never again be a pain in my egg. You could point out that this was before the characters actually had voices in the games. Even so Sonic's voice in the English dub has a very bizarre, indeterminate accent. It sounds like a cross between a vague southern accent and a British falsetto, with the latter being obvious in the more frenetic scenes. Alternatively, it can be described as a texan trying to put on a surfer dude accent. Word Salad Lyrics: The lyrics to "Look Alike. the ending tune of the film. While look-alikes are a theme in this movie, the rest of the lyrics are a bit. stream of consciousness.
